Course Description:

This course focuses on the development of leadership skills used in managing a successful business.  Students will analyze the role of a leader in business, with a focus on decision making, management of group dynamics, workplace stress and conflict, motivation of employees and planning. Effective business communication skills, ethics, and social responsibility are also emphasized.

Overall Curriculum Expectation - all units are interrelated

Unit 1 THE FOUNDATION OF MANAGEMENT

  • The initial unit introduces students to the roles and responsibilities of management within an organization. Students will explore communication techniques utilized by those in leadership positions. Students will have the opportunity to examine various case studies and apply the content introduced to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the foundations of management

Unit 2 PLANNING

  • Students will focus on planning and its importance to the success of an organization. Students will gain an understanding of appropriate planning tools and techniques that are utilized by those in leadership positions. Students will explore the notion of change within the work environment as a result of internal and external pressures.

Unit 3 ORGANIZING AND CONTROLLING

  • Students will gain an understanding of the organizational structures used to manage the workplace effectively within unit three. Students will assess methods of controlling changing work environments in order to suit the needs and best interests of an organization and its workers.

Unit 4 LEADING

  • The final unit focuses on human behaviour. Students will be introduced to how individuals and groups function within the workplace. Students will evaluate the impact of issues related to moral, ethical and social responsibility. Emphasis will be placed on group dynamics and the application of leadership techniques.
