Course Description:
This course emphasizes the knowledge and skills required to plan and make effective presentations and to speak effectively in both formal and informal contexts, using such forms as reports, speeches, debates, panel discussions, storytelling, recitations, interviews, and multimedia presentations. Students will research and analyse the content and characteristics of convincing speeches and the techniques of effective speakers; design and rehearse presentations for a variety of purposes and audiences; select and use visual and technological aids to enhance their message; and assess the effectiveness of their own and others’ presentations.

Unit 1 Introduction to Public Speaking
Essentially, public speaking is a presentation given, live before a crowd of people. It can cover a wide range of topics. The objective of the speech might be to instruct, influence, engage, educate, or entertain the listeners. Importance of public speaking comes in handy at every important event of our lives. The 4 Types Of Public Speaking types are introduced to students as are the methods, means and tools to brainstorm, come up with, and begin drafting these kinds of speeches. Students will be focused also on the tools and strategies on overcoming blocks or stressors to speech giving, including dealing with stage fright, and fear of public speaking.
- Identify elements of style, stylistic devices, and organization in selected speeches or debates by famous orators
- Select relevant and significant information from research to suit the topic, purpose, and audience use appropriate and effective language in oral presentations
- Use techniques of effective listening and note-taking to understand the ideas and information given in presentations
Unit 2 Preparing for Presentations
Essentially, this unit is focused on students drafting and editing their speeches, and the grammatical, public speaking and speaking skills required in order to draft, edit, and present their presentations. The bulk of student time will be given over to practicing and implementing these strategies and tools, including methods to catch and keep audience attention.
- Identify a variety of presentation forms (e.g., oral reports, speeches, lectures, debates, public address announcements, panel discussions, book discussions, storytelling, recitations, role plays, seminars, sales presentations, interviews, multimedia presentations)
- Assess the appropriateness of the chosen form and the effectiveness of a presenter’s ideas, in view of the topic, audience, and purpose of the presentation
Unit 3 Venturing into Storytelling
In this unit, students will be identifying the techniques used by effective speakers to make convincing presentations, including describing the conventions of oral and non-verbal communication of various cultures. Students will investigate how these kinds of communication conventions affect the delivery of oral presentations. Students will be further focusing on use of appropriate strategies to increase confidence in public speaking.
Unit 4 Presentation Critiques
In this unit, students will be evaluating and assessing presentations. They will identify how audio visual aids are used to support the oral components of a presentation. They will assess the style and organization of different kinds of presentation and peer and self evaluate these. They will also identify the skills they have acquired in making and assessing presentations, and create a plan for self improvement.
- Assess the effectiveness of the presentation techniques and audio-visual aids used in an oral presentation.
- Provide objective and constructive feedback on presentation rehearsals and presentations by peers.
- Monitor audience reactions during a presentation and adapt delivery accordingly.
- Identify the skills they have acquired in making and assessing presentations, and create a plan for improvement.
Unit 5 Final Summative Presentation
In the Final Summative Presentation, students will apply knowledge of the characteristics of effective presentations to plan content and structure for this final presentation, delivering it to several different audiences. They will be spending a lot of time in brainstorming, drafting, editing and preparing for this, their biggest presentation in the course.
